What to put in the dog pack?

We use Wolf Packs® for our dogs........Samoyed Dogs and Alaskan Malamutes

In order to get your dog used to wearing a back pack, try putting it on empty and taking them on the normal walks. This should get them used to having something covering their back. Then you can start adding weight. For Samoyed Dogs, 25% of their body weight and for Alaskan Malamutes, 33% of their body weight can be packed.

For relatively short day hikes

  • Either Small, Medium or Large sized Wolf Packs® Trekker Reflector pack appropriately adjusted for the dog *
  • Either 1.5 liter or 2 liter water bottles (one in each pannier)
  • An appropriate sized (for the size dog) set of Cordura Nylon Pad Protectors (booties)
  • A roll of "vet wrap"
  • Container of "Bag Balm" ointment
  • "Pooper Scoopers"
  •  Premeasured Eukanuba food in zip lock bags...one meal as needed
  •  Ruffwear Trail Runner water/food collapsible bowl **

* We semi-permenently adjust the front strap to the dog once and then just slip the front strap over the dogs head to put the pack on or take it off. That way the abdominal strap is the only one you have to snap or unsnap depending if you're putting the pack on or taking it off. This is very simple for rest stops and doesn't leave anything on the dog.
** We use a small carabiner to attach this to the outside of the pack.

For longer multi-day hikes

We will use the largest pack we can fit on the dog and use the largest water bottles. That is to say, if on the females Samoyeds, we normally use a small pack, we would use a medium. We also pack more dog meals using two per day and add vitamin supplements.
